Two MPs initiate a bill to remove the Chief Justice from GLC
Two Members of Parliament (MPs) have initiated a Private Member’s bill to get the Chief Justice and other Justices of the Supreme Court removed from the General Legal Council (GLC).
Hon. Rockson Nelson Dafiamekpor, MP for South Dayi Constituency in the Volta Region, and Hon. Francis Xavier-Sosu, MP for Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region are seeking an amendment to legal education in Ghana.
In a letter dated October 26, 2021, addressed to the Clerk of Parliament titled “Private Member’s Bill,”, the two lawyers are seeking to initiate a Bill to amend the Legal Profession Act, 1960, Act 32.
They want the amended Act to “exclude the Chief Justice as well as other Justices of the Supreme Court from the General Legal Council”.
Also, they seek “to redefine the functions of the GLC and to provide for reforms in Legal Education such that accredited Faculties of Law with the requisite facilities would be licensed to run professional law, provide for discipline of lawyers and related matters to give effect to Article 37(1) of the 1992 Constitution”.
