The women’s wing of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tema Central Constituency has organised a free breast cancer screening for residents of Tema in the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise which took place at the forecourt of the Pentecost Church located at Tema Heavy Industrial Area near Nestle Ghana Limited (Super paper, “Ayigbe Town”) on Sunday 24th October, 2021 was attended by hundreds of women and men.

It forms part of efforts to reach out and to raise awareness of breast cancer among women in the region.

The event was a collaboration between the NDC women wing led by the constituency women organizer, Mrs. Josephine Cornelius Lawal and her deputy, Mrs. Gloria Akua Mensah and health personnel from the Ankam Medicure Center in Accra and Tema General hospital.

Speaking to the press, Mrs. Lawal said it is their intention to hold the exercise yearly, free of charge, to all women within the constituency and beyond to help create awareness and to enhance early detection. She encouraged women to do away with shyness and regularly go for check-up since it was the sure way to ensure early detection and treatment.

On her part, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada Constituency, Hon. Doyoe Ghansah encouraged women to take very good care of their breasts and report any unusual sign in the breast at the hospital. She also advised men to regularly conduct breast cancer tests since men could also develop the disease.

Other dignitaries of the NDC who were there to support the exercise were Simon Tetteh, Greater Accra Deputy Communication Officer, Abigail Elorm Mensah, National Deputy Women Organiser, Maame Efua Houadjeto, National Deputy Women Organiser, Linda Obenewa Ocloo, MP for Shai Osudoku and other party executives in the constituency.

October every year is set aside as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is marked globally with various activities aimed at increasing awareness, early detection, treatment of the breast cancer, and to raise funds for research into the disease. According to WHO statistics, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in Ghana, accounting for 20.4% of all cancer cases and 12.4% of deaths attributable to cancer in 2019.
