Police Arrest Juaben MCE Nominee over bribery allegation
The Ashanti Regional Police yesterday, November 1, 2021, arrested the rejected Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Juaben Municipal Assembly.
A statement from the Police states that Mr Alex Sanfo Kantanka was arrested in connection with a viral video in which he was seen demanding a refund of monies paid to Assembly members to aid his affirmation as MCE.
He was granted bail after his caution statement was taken.
In the secretly recorded video, he was seen angrily exchanging words with some assembly members while hurling insults and curses them.
He told them to be ready to refund the money urgently.
Mr. Kantanka, failed to secure the two-thirds majority after he garnered just six out of the twenty-six votes cast in the first attempt.
He was reappointed by the President, but some Assembly members boycotted the first confirmation exercise on Friday, citing intimidation over the deployment of armed security officers.
Earlier in the day, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, was seen appealing to members of the Juaben Municipal Assembly to forget the past and vote for the President’s nominee. But that was not enough to convince the assembly members as they rejected the nominee for the second time.
