Majority NPP cooperating with ‘NDC Speaker’ but Haruna-led Minority wasn’t doing so – Asiedu Nketiah

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has revealed that even though the NDC fought hard to elect a Speaker of Parliament from the party so as to be at advantageous position in Parliament, the party still got disadvantaged by the Haruna-Iddrisu-led Minority Caucus refused to cooperate with the Speaker.

He found it ironic that the Majority New Patriotic Party (NPP) side rather cooperated effectively with the Speaker while the NDC minority refused. This, he explained, led to his unavoidable decision to reshuffle the leadership.

“My priorities in Parliament is to see our Parliamentary Caucus working together and also cooperating with the Speaker of Parliament. Why did we struggle to get an NDC person elected as Speaker of Parliament? There are certainly some advantages. And those advantages can be tapped into when your leadership Is cooperating with the Speaker. So we cannot have a situation where NPP leadership is cooperating with the Speaker and our NDC leadership have challenges cooperating with the Speaker. And if you’re given a party whose leadership in Parliament is not working together, what do you do? You make the changes or you resign. And I am not about to resign,” Mr Asiedu Nketiah said.

The sudden reshuffle of the minority leadership has left many surprised. Many of the NDC MPs have protested against the decision, which they say was not preceded by exhaustive consultation.

The NDC national leadership led by Asiedu Nketiah had given various unconvincing reasons for the sudden reshuffle but had to finally admit that the leadership was reshuffled because of their failure to cooperate with the Speaker of Parliament.
